The announcement of an archeological discovery at Camp Weed in 2008 startled the diocese. Before St. Augustine was founded in 1565 (the oldest city), there were Europeans here on the Camp Weed property. On September 12th in 1539 there were 600 soldiers, 200 horses and 800 pigs right here on the Camp Weed grounds!
Each year on the Saturday closest to September 12th we provide a program of discovery and education at Camp Weed. This year it will be Saturday, September 11th, 10am-2pm. Come hear and experience this unique event in history. Partake in a treasure hunt as we explore an actual site which has produced numerous artifacts from the period. Finally, enjoy a lunch like the indigenous people would have had, grown on our grounds. Lunch items will come from our own organic garden where we grow vegitables just like the people did in 1539. There will be venison like the Indians ate and Pork also, which the Spaniards would have brought to the table. This fun day is suitable for adults and children as young as fourth graders (10 years old). Young people must be accompanied by an adult.
Cost (includes lunch)-$25
